By now, many of you will already know Susan Patterson, the author of this week’s contribution to Personality Dimensions® Pandemic Pastimes with Master Trainers, from her work in creating Virtually Everything – A Building Blocks Companion Guide. A lot changed between when she first began to dip into the virtual world of training and when Virtually Everything was published, so much so that when we asked her about writing the adjunct piece to Building Blocks – which became known as Virtually Everything because that’s how we kept referring to it in the office – she quickly responded with her delightful sense of humour and threatened to send me glitter pens since I’m woefully unprepared in that area it would seem (I didn’t even know they existed until then)! Enjoy Susan’s recollection of her response to the pandemic and how it has, and continues to, changed her Personality Dimensions® presentations.

Never say Never
COVID hit and face to face workshops and training sessions got cancelled. I waited – certainly there would be some notice if this was a serious thing. Workshops and Training Online – Never – this will not be a thing.
The World told me a different story, and before I knew it I was online having my first Personality Dimensions® event. It was not hard. I was surprised. Is there a chance you will make some errors? Absolutely. Don’t sweat it, all online platforms have many tutorials to learn how to do it. And our Colleagues and Clients shared ideas because we are all learning.
Now I have to smile to myself, by saying Never, I would have cheated myself out of this experience. Personality Dimensions® is adaptable equally in a virtual setting as it is in a face-to-face setting. And wow what a Virtual experience it has been – I have met amazing people, some who would never have had the opportunity to take this Learning if not for online training. With a bit of tweaking and adjusting the materials we have, it has been truly successful.
Saying Never sets up resistance, challenges and closes doors. Most of us are proficient with Personality Dimensions® face-to-face, and we will have in-person workshops and training again. It might not look the same. Our new reality is Change and different experiences.
So why not offer both? Reinvent your practise. Take advantage of the number of great new resource available to make Personality Dimensions® work with both venues.
With this experience, I have to say I will never work off-line again … well, never say never….

Has COVID Impacted Your Business?
COVID-19 was the end of my business…or so I thought. As an Extraverted Authentic Blue–Resourceful Orange, the lack of interaction with people left me wallowing in self-pity and self-doubt… for about 3 weeks. Then my Resourceful Orange took over, and I decided to learn everything there was to know about virtual training using Zoom – a platform I had never used before. People came together and shared their knowledge and expertise freely to help everyone transition to this new reality we were facing. I went from knowing virtually nothing (pun intended) about Zoom to teaching others how to use it. My biggest takeaway was the understanding that almost anything one can facilitate in person, one can facilitate virtually. Delivering Personality Dimensions® in a Virtual World training and so much more stemmed from that.

It’s that time of year again… time to pull the PD Stats Robot (patent still pending) out of its work cube to report on this past year’s Personality Dimensions® statistics. With so many of us working from home, there has been a significant increase in the number of facilitators making the move to PD-Online. In fact, so many of you are using it now that the PD Stats Robot is on secondment with CLSRassessments.com to help keep things moving along smoothly.
The staff at CLSR Inc. would like to thank all of the Certified Trainers who took the time to send in their workshop statistics over the past year. Collecting workshop statistics allows us to do further research on the reliability and validity of Personality Dimensions®. If you look at the Primary Colour Breakdowns over the past 16 years, you will notice very little change with them over time; In fact, there was a less than 1% variance with two of the Dimensions over the past few years. That’s some pretty good reliability scores! The PD Stats Robot is an amazing piece of computing technology, and a surprisingly good pastry chef, but can only work with the information that it receives. Please remember to submit your statistics even if you are administering Personality Dimensions® Online. Remember that the assessment component isn’t the final word on an individual’s primary colour, especially if scores are close; clarification also comes from the Brightening Group exercises in a workshop.

I remember very well the concerns that were expressed by a lot of trainers about how well Personality Dimensions® would work online and Michael and Larry were no exception, as their note will tell you.
And yet, just today, I got some program evaluations from them for their most recent Level I training, done virtually, of course, and here’s a bit of what they shared with me. ‘Again, it is amazing how this works online… We had some difficulty ending on time because of all the stories/anecdotes. So much fun. Doesn’t seem like work.

A little more than a year ago, we were reluctant to take Personality Dimensions online. “Can’t work in that environment,” we said. “People won’t buy it,” we continued. “The software, bandwidth, and methodology will require new skills and techniques which will take too much time!” – we exclaimed.
The pandemic changed all that. Covid-19 forced us to rethink our modus operandi. Being sequestered at home, we began to seek face-to-face contact with family and friends. Along came ZOOM! Family and friends were reluctant learners – afraid to try something new. Once tried, we couldn’t get them to end the session. It was easy. It was fun.
So, we thought this could really work with Personality Dimensions®. Still skeptical, we began to brainstorm how we might structure our 3-day Level I training program. We took a course by Sandra Summerhayes and discussed methodologies with other instructors. While in this phase, we began getting requests for workshops and training!
There is nothing like the prospect of earning money – “Show me the money!” – we said, that inspired us to launch into full design and planning mode. We had nothing else to do – talk to each other all day? Oh, how boring! We needed to spice things up a bit.
We started with one person who really enjoyed the program. But more than that, we found it worked! It was refreshing. Then we had a participant from South Korea. Wow – “the world is our oyster” – we thought. In spite of the time difference, we made it work and it was fantastic.
Then we did a workshop with 4 people, learning how to navigate breakout rooms, whiteboards, Kahoot, videos, audios, etc. We were amazed how easy and fast it was to adapt our materials and PowerPoint to this new environment. Moreover, our clients gave us the accolades that we shall cherish. No longer are we unbelievers – we have been converted, maybe never to return to the past ways of doing things.

“Exploring and understanding the possible functions of different group set-ups really hit home for me. This idea really has me thinking about the positive self-exploration that can be done in these different set-ups.”
“The material covered is what it says it is… a tool. A tool that was given to me by my knowledgeable facilitators. It not just a bunch of facts that are going sit in my brain and rot, it’s something I will use.”
“The facilitators were, knowledgeable and presented the workshop in a manner that was both interesting and informative. Also, their openness in discussing and sharing their personal situation created a more relaxed environment, which in turn made it more comfortable for me to share.”
People around the word have had to adjust to a new reality over the last 16 months or so, and make the best of what we are able to do. As we are rearranging our lives around COVID-19, we are experimenting with new ways to keep our training alive, while maintaining social distance. More importantly, we would like to bring positive energy to our clients through the Personality Dimensions® training program. We hope people could take their minds off the stress related to COVID-19 in the few hours they are learning about Personality Dimensions® and enjoying the outdoors.
Although we have been conducting Personality Dimensions® training for many years, we have never delivered a PD workshop in the wild outdoors. Therefore, we consulted Plain Hiker, a company which specializes in designing trail journeys to meet different learning goals.
After detailed planning and route testing, we finally conducted our first PD in the Wild at Tung Chung on Lantau Island in Hong Kong. We had 12 participants and to minimize social contact associated with the distribution of assessment materials, we asked them to complete PD-Online prior to the outdoor workshop. This not only saved us from having to carry all the assessment materials to the outdoor site, it also allowed the participants to complete the assessment in a location of their choice.
In terms of activities, we designed them with social distancing in mind. For brightening, we modified the Survivor Challenge from the Team Building Toolkit by asking each brightened group to find 10 essential items for their survival on the island. For blending, we developed a Campfire activity, and asked blended groups to start their own campfire with the materials provided. We then finished the day with Circle of Self.
We did not have a computer and screen to go through the PowerPoint presentation in the outdoor setting, but we used the PD for Youth pamphlet as a guide to go through the core needs, characteristics, likes, skills, strengths and potential weakness. We also decided to just give out the score sheet from the online report on the day of the event, and send out the soft copy of the full profile report after the event has been completed.
Overall, we had a lot of fun, and the feedback was positive for PD in the Wild! I think using PD-Online is a good way to minimize contact, and holding activities in the outdoors is a great way for our participants to get a breath of fresh air. We still have a lot of improvements to make for PD in the Wild, but I think we are off to a great outdoors start!

What an interesting time we live in! There have been so many changes in our lives in the last 16 months or so and for some of us that means that we’ve become less and less connected than we otherwise would be. The same is true of our Personality Dimensions extended family.
So… I asked our active Personality Dimensions Master Trainers to take a few minutes and put together a brief note that could be posted on the various Personality Dimension online groups. It didn’t need to be any ‘latest and greatest’ tips and tricks; it could be a fond memory of something that happened at one of their Personality Dimensions workshops, or perhaps an “Aha moment” that has stayed with them. Or they could just let the rest of us know what they’ve been up to during the pandemic.
Over the next several weeks we will be sharing with you their responses. The first person to respond was Wayne Jones and he has shared with us some insights into what he has been doing during the pandemic. Enjoy this brief insight into Wayne’s world.

Being an Introverted, Organized Gold individual, my mind immediately went to two places:
what is Denise’s deadline on this delightful task (so I can submit it ahead of time and check it off my “to do” list?
what is the best organizational format that will allow me to be succinct, yet somewhat pithy?
I decided, then, to divide this brief summary into two sections: Professional and Personal.
Like most of you, my professional interests are diverse, and Personality Dimensions certainly holds a key position in that portfolio. I enjoyed doing some virtual online training with Sandra Summerhayes. Lifelong learning is so important! As Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” I recently was asked to be one of the speakers for the 2021 Virtual Conference of the Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education. My webinar “Victorious Living! Victorious Parenting!” was based on temperament and has now been posted to YouTube. All conference participants received a parent toolkit package which included a copy of our book “Great Parenting Skills for Navigating Your Kid’s Personality”.
My other professional role is a Faculty Advisor with Nipissing University, in which I monitor the progress of 24 students, about half of whom will enter the teaching profession next September. With the many changes in the Ontario educational landscape this year, we all learned to pivot quickly and adapt to emerging realities. Many of these students also contributed their thoughts on the challenges of online teaching and learning, which were embedded in the recent 4 blog series found earlier on this page.
Of course, family and friends are the most important facets of my life (even though the Authentic Blue part of me is my least dominant). With my daughter and two grand daughters living with me, and my other daughter’s family ten minutes away, we are in constant contact!
My other two big personal interests are running and records.
I have always enjoyed sports and physical activity. In the past fifteen years or so, I have focused more on running – doing 5 and 10K races from time to time. After Kate’s passing, my daughter and I ran the New York Marathon in her memory (well, we walked and jogged). I decided that I could actually “run” a marathon, so just before the pandemic, I ran one in Celebration Florida, and was fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I was accepted, so on October 11th, I will be running the Boston Marathon – another bucket list item to be checked off.
My other hobby is record collecting and selling, and I have over 3000 records (mostly classical and jazz). I have about 750 listed on www.discogs.com for sale, and I’m always looking for interesting vinyl to add to my collection. I recently purchased a 1919 Victrola to play the 78 rpm records I have.
So, that’s my story in a nutshell. I look forward to reading the stories of my colleagues.
A couple of months ago I promised to follow up the blog on Introverts with its flip side on Extraverts. It was a refreshing dip back into the “Splash” pool (a mere 10 years after the release of my first book, Splash, An Introvert’s Guide to Being Seen, Heard and Remembered). And within it, a big shout out to Personality Dimensions®, and its fabulous feature of acknowledging and exploring the expressions and experiences of those with preferences for Introversion and Extraversion within each of the four temperaments.
I’m going to start this offering with a refresh on the general differences between Introverts and Extraverts, and then dig in a little deeper for Extraversion within each Personality Dimensions® colour.

The Resourceful Orange Extravert:
It’s all about FREEDOM! These folks are most at home in the concrete world; with things that can be seen, touched and used. They have keen senses, love working with their hands, are born for action, and for making free, spontaneous manoeuvres that get quick, effective results. They have a natural talent for the arts, are comfortable with risk, and often have “action/doing” type careers such as salespeople, paramedics, pilots, craftsmen. Life is to be enjoyed!
Core Psychological Needs: Freedom to act on the needs of the moment, the ability to make an impact now, to have control over how they operate.
Strengths: Seeing and seizing an opportunity, reading people and situations, adapting to the circumstances, persuasive, managing a crisis, creating options and solutions.
Stressors: Rigidly enforced rules, routine and boredom, negativity, not being in control, no fun.
People who misunderstand me might say I’m: rebellious, rambunctious, class clown, careless, no follow-through, risk taker, can’t sit still.
The Inquiring Green Extravert
It’s all about COMPETENCE! This gang gives much importance to intellect and proficiency. They thirst for knowledge, and seek to know the foundations and principles behind why things are as they are and how things work. They work tirelessly, and pride themselves on the ingenuity they bring to their work. They have high standards for themselves and others. They are the engineers, the professors, the scientists, the mechanics and the systems people.
Core Psychological Needs: Knowledge and competence, mastery, to be seen as an expert in their field.
People who misunderstand me might stay I’m: sceptical, arrogant, need to be right, insensitive, impatient, without social EQ.
The Authentic Blue Extravert
It’s all about RELATIONSHIPS! These individuals are passionate about personal growth, and nurturing harmonious relationships. They believe that life is full of unknown possibilities and untapped potentials. Highly ethical in their actions, they hold themselves to a strict standard of personal integrity. They are filled with kindness; and they cherish warm intimate friendships. They gravitate to jobs such as counsellors, teachers, ministers and advocates.
Core Psychological Needs: Self-actualization, finding meaning and significance, unique identity.
Talents: Empathy, seeing and developing potential in others, generating possibilities, identifying ethical issues, advocating for causes or others, diplomacy, communication, creating harmony.
Stressors: Conflict, insincerity, betrayal, lack of integrity, no room for innovation, inauthentic behaviour, unfairness, superficiality, intense competition.
People who misunderstand me might stay I’m: too soft, overly sensitive, overly helpful, not focussed enough on task, emotional.
The Organized Gold Extravert
It’s all about SECURITY and belonging! These are sensible, down-to-earth people who excel at precision and attention to detail. They believe in following the rules and cooperating with authorities. They are careful about schedules, cautious about change, and take pride in being trustworthy, hardworking and reliable. You’ll often find them in nursing, teaching, accounting, management, administration and police work. They are comfortable and competent in leadership roles.
Core Psychological Needs: Responsibility, duty, sense of belonging, caring for others.
Talents: Supervising and monitoring, providing for others’ needs, warning of danger, developing policy and procedures, maintaining and passing on traditions, making decisions.
Stressors: Disorganization, lack of discipline, abrupt change in plan, irresponsibility, people who are not prepared, tardiness, lack of adherence to rules.
People who misunderstand me might stay I’m: too rigid, judgmental, inflexible, all work no play, critical, pessimistic, demanding.
The Good News, Once Again
The good news is that, as different as Introverts and Extraverts are, they both come in the same four varieties. So they share many behavioural similarities!
For me, the recognition that “it’s not personal, it’s personality” has provided freedom, acceptance, understanding and effectiveness to my dealing with people; professionally and personally. I hope this awareness does the same for you.

They are careful about schedules, cautious about change, and take pride in being trustworthy, hardworking and reliable. You’ll often find them in nursing, teaching, accounting, management, administration and police work.
Core Psychological Needs: Responsibility, duty, sense of belonging, caring for others
Talents: Logistics, supervising and monitoring, measuring, providing for others’ needs, warning of danger, developing policy and procedures, maintaining and passing on traditions
Stressors: Abandonment, lack of discipline, insubordination, irresponsibility
When I’m out of energy: May withdraw from responsibility, complain, sigh
As an Introvert I sometimes feel like I’m missing out on: being appreciated and acknowledged for all that I do

We’re back with another edition of Personality Dimensions® on TV, this time featuring the wildly popular television series, The Big Bang Theory. While remembering that we’re all a blend of the four colours, some of the characters are more balanced colour wise, while others lead with a much more dominant Personality Dimensions colour. Check out what we thought each character is personality type wise, and give us your input on whether you think we are right!
Leonard is a very smart character, with a quick wit to combat anyone -including Sheldon! He has a PhD in Physics which makes him a naturally inquisitive and information seeking individual. However, he also has a warm side. He tries to engage in right from the start of the show. He often is in and out of love, winning over Penny in the later seasons. These qualities are what peg Leonard as a blended Inquiring Green/Authentic Blue.
When analyzing Sheldon, it is a pretty easy decision as to what his personality preferences are. He is a natural problem solver and is often stubborn with being right all the time. He creates plans, and rigidly sticks by them. Not the over emotional type, he often examines things to the nth degree. With his two Ph.Ds in the sciences to his rigid organizational structuring of his cereal boxes, it is clear to see that Sheldon is a blended Inquiring Green/Organized Gold.
Howard is a resourceful individual and the only one who is not overly concerned with obtaining a Ph.D. While he is extremely intelligent, he is not as stimulated by the sciences as our other TV show counterparts. He’s great in a crisis, able to repair things well, and creative when he dresses. That’s why we believe Howard is a Resourceful Orange.
When looking at Raj’s personality, we see the deep-seated need for his friends and family to all get along. Always looking for love, Raj often sees the good in everyone; sometimes to his own detriment! Approval from his parents is very important to him, as well as taking care of his sister whenever she’s in town. Everyone goes to Raj’s place when they’re in trouble and needs a place to stay. It’s easy to see that Raj is an Authentic Blue.
Penny is always up for change or a new challenge. Whether it is moving to the city from small-town Nebraska to the city; staring as the leading role in Serial Ape-ist; dealing with difficult customers (Sheldon) at her waitress job; or tackling pharmaceutical sales. She is generally optimistic, ethical, honest, and sincere – you know where you stand with Penny. While she doesn’t share an interest in the kinds of abstract concepts her friends thrive on, Penny encourages and supports what they do. These traits are what make Penny a Resourceful Orange.
Bernadette is a natural leader who is comfortable taking charge of a situation. She is dependable, practical, and loyal. She shows great patience and understanding with Sheldon despite his quirks. The is practical with money and often questions Howard about some of his impulsive purchases. In her work life as a pharmaceutical researcher she is organized and excels at collecting and classifying data. While Bernadette does show developed traits from other colours, we believe her first preference is Organized Gold.
When Amy first came on the scene, she was almost a stereotype of her personality type, but we’ve since seen that there’s far more to her. Amy is insightful, and investigative. She learns by asking questions, and drives Penny nuts doing it. Some of her questioning can get a little TMI, but it just shows how much she wants to learn. She has a tight-knit group of friends that she is fiercely loyal to. It’s for all of these reasons, and not just that she is scientifically minded that we believe Amy is an Inquiring GreenGreen.
